Mrs. Kelley's Class' Letters to Mem Fox

October 18, 2002
Dear Mem Fox,
I really like your books a lot.  My favorite book is Koala Lou. Because my mom says, "I do love you," it reminds me of my mom. It also reminds me of my dad, because he says it to me too. I really enjoy your alliteration, like "whistled and wildly waved." I also enjoy the way you use repetition, "over and over and over again." It sounds so good.  My class loves your books so much.  My teacher loves reading them to us, but we haven't read all of them yet.  I love studying about them.  Thank you for writing all your books.
Sincerely,
Lindsay

Dear Mem Fox,
I liked reading all eight of your books.  The one I really liked the most was Tough Boris. I really enjoyed the book. I liked it because it had pirates, ships and gold. It reminds me of when I saw a movie with real people in it called "Goonies." I liked the way you used repeating words like, "Pirates are greedy. All pirates are greedy.
Sincerely,
Joshua

Dear Mem Fox,
I like the way you use your own life when you write.  I like
Shoes from Grandpa. I liked how you used the words over and over and over. It's like The House that Jack Built. That's what I liked, and that's what I learned from that story.  The story reminds me of when my mom gave me socks and I had to like them.
Sincerely,
Chris

Dear Mem Fox,
I really like Koala Lou because it reminds me of when my brother and I were racing, and then I lost the race.  My mom told me it was okay, and then I felt loved. I like the way you put in alliteration like "wildly waved." I liked the sets of three like, "roared, and clapped and stamped their feet."  I really like all your books.
Love,
Yvette

Dear Mem Fox,
I like your books.  My favorite one is Hattie and the Fox. I like it because Hattie is telling them something, but they don't believe her. At the end the cow was either eating the fox or sticking its tongue out, but it doesn't matter. I recognized that you used alliteration like, "Good Grief, said the Goose. "Mrs. Kelley was reading the story to me. I wasn't reading it. But I want to read it again myself because I liked it so much.
Sincerely,
Amanda

Dear Mem Fox,
I like your books, Mem Fox. Mrs. Kelley read us seven books of yours. I like Shoes from Grandpa because all of her family were giving her clothes except jeans, and then her grandpa bought her jeans. I like the craft where your illustrator made the part that said grandpa bought her shoes. Shoes from Grandpa reminds me of when my grandpa bought me shoes.  I like your crafting too, Mem Fox. You're a great writer. I like your rhyme in Shoes from Grandpa like, "socks from the local shops", and "coat you wear on a boat." I liked your alliteration too, like "when the weather gets wetter."
Love,
Sergio

Dear Mem Fox,
I like your books, and my favorite one is Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge. It reminds me of when my aunt lost her memory.  I like the way you used rhyming, like "Mr. Tippet who was crazy about cricket."  I liked the way you used repetition, "something warm, something warm."
Love,
Melissa

Dear Mem Fox,
I enjoyed reading and studying your books. I like all eight of your books, because they have a lot of detail.  The book I enjoyed reading best is Koala Lou. The reason I picked it is because it talks about love. My favorite pat is when Koala Lou lost the race, and her mom still loved her anyway.  She said, "Koala Lou, I do love you," and she did love her. Your craft is beautiful. When you wrote, "whistled and cheered and wildly waved," I think it was beautiful. You are one of my favorite writers, because you are a fabulous writer. I'd really like to know what book you are writing next.
Sincerely,
Lindsey

Dear Mem Fox,
I really like your books.  My favorite book is Shoes From Grandpa. I like this book because it is about family.  It reminds me of when I had a birthday and I got lots of shoes and clothes.  I think you are a great writer because you use lots of rhyming, like boat and coat.  You put a surprise at the end when she said, "But please, would one of you buy me some jeans?" That was the funny part!  Thank you for all of your great books.

Sincerely,
Sarah

Dear Mem Fox,
I like all your books, but I must say that Koala Lou is my favorite. I liked it when she entered a race. I thought she would win the race, but she didn't. It reminds me of when my mom said, "Hannah, I do love you." I also like the way you used a lot of sets of three, like "whistled, cheered and wildly waved their party hats." I also like the alliteration you put in, like "puffed and panted." It was a great book, but remember I like all of your books. All my classmates are writing about other books.  I hope you like all of our letters.
Sincerely,
Hannah

Dear Mem Fox,
I really like your book Shoes from Grandpa.  It reminds me of my family when they buy me shoes and clothes.  I like your rhyming because it is funny, like "socks from the local shops," and "coat you wear on a boat." I like your surprise ending: "but please one of you buy me some jeans."
Sincerely,
Taylor

Dear Mem Fox,
My favorite book you wrote is Shoes From Grandpa because it is funny when the girl said, "Can someone buy me a pair of jeans?" It  was cool when it rhymed like this: "socks from the local shops" and "a coat you wear on a boat."  I like how it does a growing pattern, and the beat of the rhythm, and how the dog was in every page. In real life my mom bought me a new pair of shoes, a new hat, new shirt, and new pants, but not in one day.  I loved my mom when she bought me all that stuff.  Thank you for those lovely books you made.
Love,
Jason

Dear Mem Fox,
I like your books really much.  The book I like best is Shoes From Grandpa.  It is great because it is about family. It reminds me of when my Grandma gave me two pairs of socks that had stripes and I had to pretend I liked them, but I didn't.  When you had her take her clothes off, it was funny. You use rhymes.  The rhyme I like is, "I'll buy you a skirt that won't show the dirt.
Love
Andrea

Dear Mem Fox,
I love all your books, especially Shoes From Grandpa. It has a funny ending, and it has rhyming and rhythm that goes: da da da da da, da da da da da, da da da da da da da da. I like your rhyming like the part where it says "to go with some socks from the local shops." Once I got a lot of clothes that I did not want, even some sticky socks. I like that part that goes, "but please would one of you buy me some jeans?"
Sincerely,
Tyler

Dear Mem Fox,
I enjoy reading your books.  You are a great writer.  I can't wait to listen to your stories.  My favorite book of all of them is Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge.  I like that book because it reminded me of my grandma when she lost her memory. It was a sad day for my mom and dad and me and my brothers, too.  I like your rhyming very, very much and I know some of them:  "Mr. Tippet, who's crazy about cricket," and" Miss Jordan who plays the organ." I like your craft of sets of two. I know some of them too: "Something warm, my child," and "Something long ago, something long ago, my lad. I like your writing.
Love,
Camille

Dear Mem Fox,
The book I like best is Shoes from Grandpa, because it has a lot of repetition, like you copied parts over and over again. I t reminds me of my grandpa and how when I was three years old  he was giving things to me and we would always play with each other.  I like the ending when the girl said, "Please would one of you buy me some jeans?"  When you read this letter, you will be surprised.
Love,
Erica

Dear Mem Fox,
I like reading your books. I like all eight we read.  Your books are great. I like all your books, but I like Koala Lou the best. KoalaLou reminds me of my mom.  It reminds me of when my sister Brooke was born.  They gave more attention to her than to me and my sister Sheana. I like how you write in rhyming words and you used lots of details.

Tiffany
